http://www.tuaw.com/2009/05/11/the-vibook-additional-displays-via-usb/

i am surprised I have not seen more post on this product .. Video playback and 2D acceleration on the new chip look nice compared to the older units that were released early.

The chip is an enhanced version to offload some of the cpu or gpu processing power. "The ViBook Plus is one of the first devices to use DisplayLink’s new DL195 chip enabling it to support higher resolution screens of up to 1920x1200 and up to 28” with faster graphics and improved video playback that includes HD video streams."

Is seems like USB to DVI is a viable option finally. And Display link has a new series of chips out that are even faster and better than the prior 120 versions. DL-195 series, it seems like this is a very progressive technology and future looks great. http://www.displaylink.com/displaylink_hardware.html

"according to Theo Goguely, the director of product marketing from DisplayLink, their next-gen chip (tentatively scheduled for launch in the second half of this year) will offer resolutions beyond 1920 x 1200, “2K x 1K” or 2048 x 1080. Additionally, the USB GPU geek-squad has been working closely with Intel, and newer hardware with Intel’s series four graphics chip will get optimized drivers supporting OpenGL, DirectX 9 and 10 3D graphics, gaming and HD video."

"DisplayLink DL-1x5 Series

Based upon the award winning DL-1x0 series, the new DL-1x5 chips are DisplayLink's next generation ICs bringing higher resolutions and performance for video and 3D graphics, thanks to the new dual core decode engine and new DL2+ compression techniques.

This means that products using the new DL-165 and DL-195 will now be able to support HD resolutions, giving you even more space to spread out your documents and applications. "

So with gen 1 chip set the Refresh rates and OpenGL 3D was horrible. It seems as thought progress has been made in this area and the DL-195 chip set is being supported for OpenGL 3D and 2D acceleration now or in progress "Please note: This driver does not support 3D acceleration. Some features of Mac OS X applications that require hardware OpenGL acceleration, such as Keynote presentations and iPhoto slideshows, will not function properly." But it sounds like these feature will be worked on with the DL-195 chipset

currently in beta 1.6 most of the usb to dvi reviews were 1.0 or 1.1 drivers with the DL-120 chip
1.5 was released 23 February 2010 was 32 bit support for snow, so progress is definitely there
