I have always traded in with Apple and always gotten to max price but my trade ins are perfect. I always take detailed images with the lighting reflecting just right so you can see there are no scratches front or back. I could get more selling but do not want the hassle. Selling an Apple product on eBay or craigs list brings out the thieves!

Apple only estimated $350 for my 11PM. T-Mobile says $600. That’s if I decide to trade it in and upgrade.

Yup. Apple, while creating the illusion of first party trade-in to save the environment, in reality outsourced it to someone else to do the dirty job. One time I was at Singapore's Apple store, and it's the same, they outsourced the trade-in to a 3rd party, even in-store. The value was so bad that even the Apple employee did not recommend trading in with them. The same in my home country Indonesia, where even the authorized distributors outsourced the trade in to another 3rd party. For Apple, minimal risk while maintaining their "green" image.
What? What illusion? Apple gave me $$$ for my trade in. Sent a trade in kit to me in the mail and I returned the phone in the trade in kit.

Beware trading in with Apple this cycle. We sent in a 12 mini that had scratches to screen but no cracks and scuffs on the rails. Apple said estimated $250 trade-in, they received it and assessed $0 trade-in. I rejected the trade-in and it’s being shipped back to us. It has AppleCare+ until mid November, so I will file an express replacement claim and sell it on Swappa. More of a pain but I’m not taking $0.
Never ship a phone for trade-in. You'll usually get screwed. Give it directly over at an Apple Store.

I’ve never had a problem with trade in. I get the max every single year. I wonder if part of the problem is that people say their device is excellent but in reality it isn’t?

Same I’ve done this for years. A mix of in store and shipped off trade in and no issues.

Careful with Swappa, I got screwed on a sale where I had pics prior to sending of an immaculate phone, the buyer scratched it up and I lost the appeal on PayPal and the buyer didn’t even have to send the phone back. Will never use them again.
This is the reason why I only sell local in person.

I got screwed on a Swappa sale a full 5 months afterward. Buyer opened a case with paypal for "item defective" or some BS and they automatically sided with him. I didn't even know it happened until I logged into PP and saw a -$380 balance. He did send the phone back... complete with scratches, dents, missing accessories, and liquid damage  Item defective my butt, he just trashed it and didn't want it anymore. I only do store trade-ins, local sales, or give my old devices to family now. I'd rather get a bit less than get scammed.

My trade in via Apple went to Elk Grove, CA.

Never had a problem with the mail in trade. I received the credit for my trade today. All good.

Apple is using Northstar a trashy third party to deal with trade-ins. Not an excuse but to highlight where this garbage is coming from.

BE skeptical. USE your voice to tell Apple they should NOT be using a third party service for this! Tell Apple to value hardware as new with no AppleCare+ fixes. The AC+ should count as warranty or full repair to restock & parts or new resale as such the end user would be granted!

Now for iPhone 12 mini users like myself currently. Trade ins anywhere is not worth it. You have a great and I queue phone. Either burn it out fully or sell it after market in top quality condition. Period.
Most companies contract with third parties, especially for resale or trade… It’s fine as long as they make it right when things go awry. Apple isn’t in the business of resale. They do refurbs more directly, but even then there’s third parties.

Amazon doesn’t run their Kindle trade in. It’s fine.

Apple doesn’t build their phones, etc.

Resale of Refurbs is STILL resale.

In no way is trade-ins for upgrades specific to resale. Apple has always been in the business of resale since glass and aluminum was its choice for all their products as a primary choice - its due to high recycling capability which isn’t just for environmental benefits but wait for it … resale.

Apple specifically stated this on stage at the 2008 MBP Unibody manufacturing process section, to re-use shaved off aluminum during manufacturing into manufacturing. Also again specifically when mentioning Liam or whatever the first recycling robot during an iPhone announcement years ago.

Apple can benefit heavily in terms of covets by stripping out the middle man businesses and metrics which could be falsified. Not doing so doesn’t complete their closed loop goals.

Them benefitting from high resale value is not the same as them personally handling millions of used phones to put in the hands of used marketplace consumers.

Apple refurb is a much more expensive process than resale. They are not similar at all. Apple refurb costs them a lot of money because they have educated technicians disassemble the product, repair, and re-house with unused official screens and body shells.

Sorry, but it’s a very different and low margin business to actually handle the used phones that aren’t being refurbed and then marketing them to used buyers with condition status etc.

Apple only includes a trade-in on their site because it encourages people to make a purchase from them. They have no reason to create a subsidiary that inspects and sells used phones at mass scale.

I ordered two iPhone 14 pro/pro max direct with apple.com

1. Phone 1 was full price iPhone pro max 14 128gb. (I traded in direct to apple retail store my iPhone 13 Pro Max 128gb for $720 plus sales taxes ($50). So they will refund my Amex $770

2. Phone 2 was iPhone 14 pro 128gb on att installment . Trade with att promo ($800 trade in credit over 36 months). I didn’t go to Apple Store to trade in 3 year old iPhone 11. I went direct to att corporate retail store. Att handled the trade in store. They circled $160 trade in value with $800 trade in promo circled printed it out and sent me out the door

I do not trust mailing in anything. If possible do it in the store.

‘Sorry but not so. I have sent my iPhone to Apple three years now and always get top dollar. I think many here are not being “truthful” about the condition of their trade.
The op admitted there were scratches on the screen.

Florida Unfortunately
I pre-ordered my 14 Pro and got it on launch day (16th) and did a trade in for my 13 Pro. Like many others, I got an email on the pre order stating I could either use the trade in kit or take it to a store. I received the trade in kit yesterday but thought I would try going to the Apple Store to see if I could just trade it in there.

They tried to do the trade in, but since I had already opted in for the trade in kit, it wouldn't let them complete the transaction. I wasn't given any option about in store or kit when I completed the transaction on pre order day and I had to have the phone delivered to my residence as I was not going to be able to do an in store pickup.

So, I think the net of it is this - If I had opted for in store pickup, I think they could have taken the trade in when I picked up the device. Since I did a delivery to my home address, they cannot override the mail in trade.

I'm late to this thread and didn't think about cancelling the mail in trade.....so, my 13 Pro is on the way to the trade in partner (Jeffersonville IN) so we'll see how that goes. Worst case, if they try to rip me off, I'll just reject the offer and have my 13 Pro sent back to me.....
Worst case scenario they damage or crack the screen and claim it was like that.

Sure, but the inflated T-Mobile trade requires a certain level plan and/or a new line. Also, the trade-in credits are spread over 24 months. Otherwise, the actual T-Mobile trade value (without any particular plan/line obligations) for an 11 PM is even lower than Apple's $370.

goroostr.com seems pretty good, got $435 for the 12 Pro Max 128GB. About $100 less than eBay (after taking PayPal, shipping and eBay fees out).

I had a 12 pro that had severe burn in because I let my mother use it for almost 2yrs and she leaves unlimited screen time on so that’s that.. but they took it in store trade in, no problem.

Sucks you had that experience though.

I used to do my trade ins with Verizon and now do them with Apple. With Verizon there was some kind of problem every year. I'm on the Apple Upgrade Program now and have had nothing but smooth sailing so far. I turn my devices in pretty much mint condition though.
