Big sur no longer supported after the 11.7.9 update?

Do you all think the big sur will no longer be supported after the 11.7.9 update?
Remember that Mojave and Catalina had its last update in July.

Had a quick look through previous releases, looks like security updates typically stop around July of the third year after release, so this is probably the final release unless Apple decides to change their (vague and undocumented) security policies.

I think there will be an 11.8 myself. I always liked 11.x. It felt fresh after the 10-15 era. I had very little problems with it and I still run it on a few older Macs. I am quite pleased with its performance on some OCLP machines.

Yup! I was going to wait for 12.7 before leaving Big Sur behind, but now that I have the confirmation I needed, I went ahead and installed 12.6.8. Big Sur served me well, though I am already noticing a performance boost by upgrading to Monterey, so yay!

Try to trigger a search for updates from Terminal with

softwareupdate -l

then open System Preferences

Monterey 12.7 came out yesterday and Big Sur was skipped. It seems like Apple intentionally went with Big Sur 11.7.10 instead of 11.8 as a way of showing it was the final update. Safari did get an update yesterday for Big Sur to 16.6.1. It remains to be seen if Big Sur will get Safari 17 next week. I'm betting it doesn't.

Apple is busy fixing the garbage iOS 17 released on 18 September, that has already received two updates since then.
When they’ll finish with that, out of the severity of the bugs and the embarrassment of the situation, they might be forced to release an update for Big Sur too.

My guess is that Big Sur is officially supported and patched until Sonoma is released. Until Sonoma is released, Big Sur is still the 3rd most current release, making it eligible for support.

I don't expect Safari 17 to be available on Big Sur, since Apple's "policy" is only 3 major versions of Safari per OS version. It launched with Safari 14 making Safari 16 the end of the line. If there was a severe security vulnerability they could release a minor patch like they do with iOS 12 and iOS 15.

From OS X Mavericks 10.9 to Catalina 10.15, you could easily identify the final Safari version available based on the minor release version number. For example, Safari 15 was the final version for Catalina 10.15.
