OS X Bioshock Infinite: "F" not working

I've finally got around to trying out Bioshock Infinite (Mac version, from Steam). After the initial rowboat scene I'm instructed to press F to climb the ladder, but pressing F does nothing. If I go into the key bindings and try to change the "use" key then this is unsuccessful (it doesn't detect that I'm pressing anything). Quitting and relaunching the game doesn't help.

Has anyone else run into this? I'm on 10.11.6.
