Browse files on Ethernet Mac via iPad?

So I have used file browser apps for browsing files on my Mac HDD, and it works, when the Mac is connected via wifi. But I seem to be having trouble finding a way to browse files on a Mac HDD when it is connected via an ethernet cable. Anyone have luck with an app that can do this? Thanks!
