How fast and how expensive is 3G nowadays?

Is it possible/reasonable to rely only on a 3G subscription for all internet needs? Could I use a 3G phone or any other device (add-on 3G card) as a modem to connect my iMac/Powerbook to the internet?

By the way, I live in Taiwan where they use HSDPA technology.
