Hi !
Im a relative newbie to the mac system and recently replaced a Photoshop CS2 PC with a G5 dual 2.7 4.5gb Ram & extra 400gb h/d...
I also have an old G4 400 agp mac currently with 384mb of ram running os 9.2* i have also an original osx install disk (damaged)

Question ?
Can I Install my G5 OSX (OE install dvd) on the G4 in anyway just to see if it runs before i aquire a full copy from my local apple shop.

Regards
Alan

1. There is a good chance it won't work because that disk was designed for a different computer.

2. No matter how you try to justify it with with the word "evaluation", it is illegal.

3. It will run fine. Go out and purchase Tiger with no worry about how it will run.

Migrating over from PC land im concerned that my 4-5 year old G4 is not up to the Tiger OS

My thoughts are that I would happliy buy a legit copy of Tiger or latter if it functions adequetly however a memory upgrade + processor upgrade + H/D Upgrade is more expensive than a mac-mini if it doesnt do the business...

Do apple offer a 30 day trial ect ?

Regards
Alan

Again, it will be fine. Don't expect it to run like your G5, but it will work nicely for email, web browsing, word processing, etc. I have a G3 400 Mhz PowerMac running Tiger with no problems. Though, it did take some work getting Tiger on it bucasue I didn't have a DVD drive.

A Mac Mini would probably run even smoother.

No, Apple does not have free trials.

Ok thanx,
that sort of satisfies my mind as we use the G4 for email and surfing really to keep the viruses spam & unsolicited porn rubbish away from our main work machines,
My wifes finding 9.2, tiger & Windows XP pro all a bit too confusing.

Is there a new mac OS scheduled soon?

Alan

you don't have to worry about that in mac-land. you left that behind by buying a new mac

1. sometimes the case, sometimes not.

2. not true - the legal agreements say, in plain english, you can install it on two if you ensure you only use one at a time. which makes sense to me, how do you use two computers at once?

3. agreed. remember the apple educational store if you're a student, have a kid, or are related to anyone that might be, because you'll pretty much qualify if you're alive.

You should really learn to read the EULA before adding your 2 cents. In "plain english":
This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time

Note: I added the bold.
