Universal Can I use iCloud to transfer game saves/progress from my previous iPad to my current one?

Previous iPad is a first gen iPad Air (came out in 2013), running ios8
Current iPad is a 9th gen iPad, running 17.1.2.

Any particular instructions for doing so (other than getting the basic sub of iCloud+ since I'm beyond the 5 GB allocation for the free tier)?
