For business, the need to open word or excel docs attached to emial is a big deal for me. Just the ability to view the attachment's content is essential. Can this be done with an iphone or the new G3 version?

You can view single page Excel or Word documents on the current iPhone. I think the new iPhone will have increased functionality concerning attachments.

Slight correction... the new iPhone Firmware (2.0) will have increased options. iPhone 3G and the original will both run 2.0 so the original or new iPhone is not important as far as email attachments go, except for download speed that is :)

For the record, you can view multi-page Word documents attached to e-mails. Can't speak for Excel; I never get the buggers.
