Everyone discusses the turtleneck and jeans look that Steve Jobs wore almost every day from 1999-2011. He had already started wearing this style as early as 1984, maybe earlier, but it wasn't the everyday, "Steve" uniform as it later became. He basically adopted that famed turtleneck/jeans combo as a daily uniform around 2000, when he stopped being interim CEO.
But for a few years he tried a different uniform between 1997-1999 when he returned to Apple. Possibly Japanese-inspired, it looked like this:
At this stage, Steve – returning as CEO – refused to adopt the suit and tie look of every other company, but perhaps he felt the need to dress a little more formally to avoid the scorn of sceptics and critics, when Apple was in its darkest years.
It's actually a really nice look – either a white shirt with black button vest, or a black jacket with white shirt but no tie. Very unique style – even more unique on the occasions where it isn't a standard white collar, but seems to be like a standing collar.
