I wanted to install a Toshiba HDD into my macPro 2,1 running El Cap. It was NTFS When I tried to format it for ElCap using disc utilities I received an error message there was insufficient memory to erase the drive. My macPro has 16GB + two other HDD. Did I miss something?

RAM has nothing to do with being able to erase an HDD.
What kind of Toshiba HDD.
Post some screenshots.

I started up the cMO and it though out a message it couldn't read the disc I inserted. Disc Utility opened and I ran First Aid. When that was finished, I ran Erase. Bingo, bang, bingo I now have an additional 500GB on the ol' girl. Thanks for the help and patience.
