Can't install official Apple package files

Hi all. I recently upgraded to Lion. I had problems with my printer/scanner, that I was able to find work-arounds for, but someone had suggested I update my drivers. I thought that sounded like a good idea, went to Apple, found driver packages for my Epson printer and my Brother printer, downloaded them both.

But, when I try to run either of them, I get the same thing. A popup message that says:

The Installer can’t open the package. There may be a problem with file ownership or permissions.

I've tried fiddling with permissions and such, to no avail.

Anyone know what's going on here? I doubt the files are damaged . . .
