So after many many hours and more money than I'd like to admit, i got my 2009 mac pro working on el capitan. Unfortunately, when i try to flash the firmware to 5.1, it does not work. The netkas upgrade tool works perfectly fine, and everything seems to work perfectly until the last point when you have to hold down the power button until the light starts flashing. The light flashes and the beeping tone plays, but then it plays the normal bootup chime and just boots into el cap and doensnt upgrade the firmware. From what i have found, this seems to happen when people dont have SIP dissabled, but I do have it dissabled so i dont know what is wrong.

Try to reduce the hardware, it sometimes happen that a controller, like Sata, or a PCI Blade disturbes running the efi updater.

Also it needs a guid formatted disk to write the ESP.

if that doesnt work there is the variant of manually build the firmware.
