iCloud Changing Login email for Apple ID-Keeping iCloud.com email for now.

I have been using icloud.com email for many years now and it's my login for my AppleID. I wish to migrate away from this. I will be switching to a gmail.com email address for my AppleID login. I'd like to change my Apple ID to this gmail.com email address but for now wish to keep the iCloud.com email address.

How do I go about switching my Apple ID login to this gmail login while also keeping my iCloud.com email address active. In a few months I plan to then stop using iCloud.com for email.
