I have an ipod nano that is ten plus years old,
As the new Itunes doesn't recognize old apple hardware, I have checked online,
And apparently to get the songs off of it, I have to change the settings to make it a hard drive, then transfer the files on the ipod nano to my laptop, but I have to reset the settings to do so,
Will i risk losing the songs I have on the nano?

It's all done through the finder with newer MacOS versions. Should be no need for iTunes if you are using a modern Mac. I can sync all my old iPods fine with this method.

Yeah if you reset chances are you will lose everything stored on the nano. You might be able to go about backing up the nano first and then try changing the settings, see what happens?
