Cinema Display -- now or...?

ok, so my new Quicksilver rocks, but my beige monitor is starting to look pretty sorry sitting next to it. i'm ready to drop the dough on a new ACD, but...

anyone smell any more price drops soon?

(i know, i know: they just dropped to $2500 a short bit ago. but $2000 would sure be nicer, eh?)

I had a very good experience buying a refurbished 15" studio display from the Apple Store online. No stuck or dead pixels, and a much better display overall than my sony 17 sfII.

The display's back plastic shell has a couple of seam lines, but they are visible only upon close examination. The TFT panel looks to be perfect.

You can get a refurbished one at the Apple Store for $2199, I think. I don't know, when you're talking about $2k, you might want to spring for the new model. Then again, if there's a problem with the studio display when you get it, you can always take it to a apple specialist and have them examine it, and replace any parts that are defective, under warranty.

Also consider going for the 17" studio display, which gives you almost as much screen resolution as the cinema display. They have them refurbished at the Apple Store for $899. I suspect that the cinema display will see a price cut or be discontinued or otherwise refreshed next year, simply because it has been around for so long. I'd speculate that whatever products they change or update, Apple will still have a massive display in their product line for the foreseeable future.

More than happy

Well, as someone who just bought his first computer (G4 867 with Superdrive), I also dropped the extra money on the 17" display. I paid $919 with the educational discount and let me say...man, it's the best display I've ever used. I know, some people may be thinking that $1000 is a lot for a monitor, but this thing makes my ViewSonic PF790 look like garbage. It really is a wonderful screen and if the few inches you don't get with the Cinema Display can save you at least $1000, I'd say it's well worth it. I really couldn't be happier with my 17". It's wonderful and it's a sight for sore eyes. All the people in my dorm are jealous.

If you can afford the 22....

If you can afford the 22... then get it. Maybe consider getting 2 17" LCD's They are very nice and you would pay about $2200 with all the stuff you would need for it to work. But thats not much less than the 22" I love my 17 Apple LCD. I just got it and it has changed my view on monitors. I used to think that its not a big deal to have a nice one... now its a necessity for me.

Watch out...

Watch out with the two 17" LCD monitor scenario...

The new monitors require an ADC connector. The only video cards that support the ADC connector are those preinstalled in the AGP 4X slot, of which there is only one.

The GeForce2MX Twinview supports two monitors, but only one of which is ADC, the other is VGA.

The other alternative is to buy a PCI video card with a DVI output, and then purchase the DVIator, which runs $150.

P.S. For those of you with new G4's that have twinviews installed, I found an ADC to VGA adapter that allows you to use two VGA motniros at once.

Yeah... I was looking into that. I wanted to run 2 LCD's when I had the cash to get another one... but it would be a lot for all the stuff I would need. I opped not to get he twinview in the hops of apple selling a pic video card with the Apple connector thats on the LCD's. It would almost be the same to buy a 22" as it would to buy 2 17" and all the parts you need.

and it's only $39!
