Clean install of Catalina from Sierra?

I have a MBPro 13" Mid 2012 currently with Sierra installed (not High Sierra). If I create a bootable Catalina USB stick, can I make a clean install of Catalina directly without having to first install High Sierra then Mojave?
Or is downloading Catalina onto a new bootable SSD and installing internally a preferred method?
All suggestions welcomed.

USB installers for Mac do not require an existing OS or upgrade from a previous OS. You can simply boot off the USB and install the new OS.
