Clean install on APFS Encrypted Drive?

Trying to install Mohave using the unsupported utility. I have 270GB free of 525GB and it told me I didn't have enough space when trying to upgrade from High Sierra? So, then I tried to just wipe the drive which is APFS Encrypted with File Vault on. It won't let me format it. I was using the Disk Utility on the unsupported Mac installer.

What am I doing wrong here?

Turn off FileVault, Command+R into disk utilities, and then wipe the drive. That should work.
