What is the most common port that a display might have, in order to connect to a laptop to work as an external display?

HDMI is most universal, a few still have DVI and many have DisplayPort. Some conversion is available HDMI to DVI works well, but lose sound if that is needed.

Increasing numbers have TB or USB-C and these may offer a hub and power supply solution.

HDMI is by far the most common, as mentioned USB-C is another that's increasing in commonality, but I think for the most of us, we looked to ensure that we have HDMI. Even Apple that was pushing USB-C/TB for everything has HDMI in their MBPs
