kernel Panics are often hardware failures. Replace your RAM, GPU, or whatever part is bad.

Yea I agree with the previous poster, in this case this doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. In my case it's a brand new 2020 Mac Mini that's just straight out of the box and had Catalina updated to the latest version that came out a few days ago.

I guess I am lucky. I did a Nuke and Pave Install, restored my files, reinstalled all my apps, and my machine has been rock solid for days...

@monstermac77 I was unable to reproduce using the 4k video on loop. I tried with and without external monitors.

The issue pops up for me every time the computer sleeps. I’m running 10.15.4 on a 2019 16’ MBP. Seems to have started after I added a second external display.

That's very interesting. I also have a 2019 16" MBP and and was having the same issue when waking from sleep, but running the 4k video on loop did cause the issue for me. Sounds like there's a variety of factors in play here.

I just updated mine and the problem is still there. Sad.

[edit] Oh wait ... after second restart, the clashing is slowing down or maybe stopping ... has been ok for 90 minutes now.

10.15.5 beta 1 is out. I hope there will be some good news… I've heard some say it includes graphics driver (Metal) related changes that Otoy is waiting for:

I've managed to fix my Mac.

I reset the PRAM and SMC and now it is behaving normal, connected to two monitors and not.

So far, yes… ;)
No, but seriously – I've seen several times people saying the problem seems gone and then they come back with: ”I spoke too soon…”.

Hi everyone, chiming in here, as I'm experiencing this issue with my almost-two-week-old 16" MacBook Pro. My typical setup is using it in clamshell mode with my 2019 LG UltraFine 4K connected.

Just this morning, I had my first unexpected reboot with the same kernel panic error message as OP. I woke the Mac with mouse/keyboard, entered password to login, then stepped away for a bit, returned to my computer showing the login screen & the error message that my Mac had restarted because of a problem:

Code:
panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff7f8f1a0ad5): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.WindowServer in 120 seconds
...etc etc ...

However, this isn't the first unexpected reboot I've had with this machine, but the first with the panic message of "userspace watchdog timeout." (I can't seem to find the old panic logs, however -- does Catalina archive and delete past-month panic logs?! But if I recall correctly one i thought was a GPU panic and then there was one other unexpected reboot and i totally forget the panic message.)

But, I've never encountered any freezing or witnessed an unexpected reboot while using the Mac. No issues there. It's always while the machine is asleep and not in-use.

Perhaps I'll try resetting the PRAM and SMC?

@leomix88 -- when you say "the update is working" are you referring to 10.15.5 beta 1?

Thanks!!

Hi Will. I am with 10.15.4.

Ah, interesting. I am on 10.15.4 and am experiencing this issue. :/ And I've been on this version since i got the mac. Right after I set it up after unboxing, I was prompted for an OS update basically.

In that case, would it be possible to clean install it again and see if it works. I got my kernel panic last week after the previous update. And the one I am updating was available yesterday when I check the software update manually.

I could try that but my Mac was/is already basically a clean install from the get-go. I never do restore from a backup or anything. A re-install will be my last resort fix attempt, I guess.

Also, I tried @monstermac77 looping 4K video test & it doesn't crash my machine.

Yeah, I'm not surprised. I'd say the majority of people who have this kernel panic aren't able to produce it with my 4k video loop method. I thought it might be an interplay between my setup and the 4k video that was causing it, then, but a complete disk wipe and fresh reinstall of Catalina proved otherwise. Disk wipe, re-install, set up Mac, open Safari, download the 4k video, play it in QuickTime and bam, 30 seconds later my machine kernel panics. This panic completely eludes my understanding.

Alrighty, got another reboot again this morning -- "panic(cpu 4 caller 0xffffff7f8b3a0ad5): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.WindowServer in 120 seconds"

Went like this: Woke up my macbook pro while attached to external display, just as I had left it last night when I put it to Sleep. Everything was fine after I logged in. No crash overnight. I stepped away for maybe 15 - 20 minutes or so, and I came back and see the Login screen again. Yep. Mac crashed & restarted. Similar error/panic message.

"Kernel Extensions in backtrace: com.apple.driver.watchdog(1.0)"

"BSD process name corresponding to current thread: watchdogd"

Ugh.

Full panic log below:

Code:

The first beta of Catalina 10.15.5 is out – if anyone dare try it.

Edit: misspelled ”dare”.
