How can I convert an AVI video so I can edit it in imovie??? is there a free application I can download???

Try opening it in Quicktime, then exporting it as a .mov file.

It won't open with quicktime....it just freezes....any other ideas???

If it's freezing, then the file must be noncompliant or corrupted. Quicktime should open AVI files. I've done in many times for making Dolby Digital files.

Google: Divx Doctor 2. It's a free AVI to MOV converter that I've used. You'll need the 3ivx codec though - read up on the Divx Doctor 2 website. I've had the same exact problem where Quicktime doesn't ever read AVI's, it just shows a white screen and freezes.

As above, Google for iSquint or MPEG Streamclip and see if they can convert the file for you.

He should also make sure that he has Perian installed.

Google ffmpegx. It's free (asks for donation though) and will convert for you. I use it to convert files from HDD and DVD camcorders for use in iMovie, and I've converted AVI files from digital cameras with movie mode as well.
