Could Plug an Electric Guitar Into an iMac

Hi, could you plug en electric guitar in an Intel iMac (Late 2015) then record the sounds in there listening to it through a headphones or earphone without burning anything on the electric guitar or the iMac taking in mind the amperage and wattage?

What would it need to get the sound of the electric guitar into an app like Garageband that's clean (not through an external mic) if possible?

Yes you can, you just need an audio interface. There are USB dongles dedicated to guitars, like the iRig or the Behringer UCG 102. I did it and it works. Once you're connected you can even apply effects to the input sound and use the software amps included in GarageBand.

an iRig costs around 60 euros, the Behringer is cheaper at around 30. You can probably find extremely cheap ones on amazon, but you know how it is with those.
Just look for "guitar audio interface usb" and make sure they are mac compatible. Also you might need a USB adapter because some of them are not USB C and depending on the iMac you have you might need it to connect directly.

If you want to do an audio interface right, get something with 2 XLR inputs (for mics) as well as "line" inputs.
The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 might be a good one to check out.

you could try a volt 76, 2 inputs, similar to a focusrite 2i2 but better quality in my opinion
