So I deleted about 600 photos via Google Photos that are backed up there. The photos and space are gone but I'm left with these square placeholder looking things. Hundreds of them. How can I get rid of them?

I had the same thing happen to me, although not as many as you. The only way I could get rid of them was press select and tick them, in other words delete them manually. They then go into the recently deleted folder. Maybe sombody else knows a better method.
