When an employer asks his employee to design a social media campaign, what exactly is the first waiting to see?

Abstractly speaking as we don't know anything else about the nature of your work, project and skills, the first step to 'breaking the ice" and getting the engine going is pitching a direction which excites and helps the team focus towards a common goal, traditionally a creative director's job.

For starters, you can aid the creative process and narrow down on a direction through defining the nature and target of the campaign. For example, is it a product launch? A brand awareness campaign? A seasonal push to maintain your established ground? An interactive contest to make some headlines and break into new markets? A prestige campaign to repair a bad image or attract investors? And most importantly, what are you good at?

Not sure if that helps in any way but without specifics is all can offer.
