I bought a new SSD, popped it into a USB 3 enclosure and connected it to my 2017 iMac running High Sierra GM. I had a message pop up saying I had connected an uninitialised hard drive and was taken to disk utility. However, the new drive was not shown. I did diskutil list in terminal and it was there.
To cut a long story short I found that disk utility has an option under 'view' to show only volumes (the default) and another option to show devices. I needed to check the 'show devices' option for my new drive to appear and I was able to go ahead and format it to APFS.
This is an FYI for others who might find this issue. Is it new in High Sierra? If not, apologies to all!
