Distracting white bar in photos app

I resisted upgrading to sierra because I preferred the photos app in El Cap due to it having pure black background when viewing photos fullscreen.

I was really keen to upgrade to High Sierra and now when i view photos full screen I get the grey background but also a incredibly distracting horizontal white bar across the entire screen at the very top of the photo?

is there a way to make the background black? I still find the grey distracting
