I want to free up some icloud storage, which is currently being taken up mostly by iMessage conversations. I want to delete the conversations in iCloud, but I only want to keep any attachments (mostly pictures) that were sent between me and certain people. How can I download these attachments to my MacBook so that I can delete the conversations from iCloud?

I think only Share > Photos for each photo, then sync with iTunes... Or you can use iMazing to export only attachments, but it's paid. If you'll decide to try it, note that you need to disable iCloud sync first and make sure that everything is loaded from the cloud. Here's the guide.
