I use Final Cut X on my 2017 MacBook Pro 13 in, its my workhorse and use if for everything. I want to get into EGPU and understand that an AMD card will increase render time and performance of my Mac because of Open GL. with apple phasing open gl out in 10.14 is it worth getting an AMD card over Nvidia or does not matter with Final Cut ?

Final Cut X utilizes Metal and is very good a leveraging a GPU from what I have seen - much more so than it’s direct competitors. Nvidia GPUs are not officially supported with macOS. I’d recommend you to stick with AMD for now.
