So I bought this unit:

UPDATE (6/6/2010): BTSTACK GPS version 1.3 WORKS WITH NAVIGON ON iPAD WIFI (non-3G model)!!!! AND it fixes the JUMPY speedo! so it's all good!

You can fast foward but there are some speed issues (the MPH indicator will go bezerk but the GPS data is accurately maintained, however. Email is dispatched to the dev regarding this issue)

edit: 5/10/2010: Navigon seems to have a problem on the iPad - I'm sure it's a navigon only issue since google maps has no issue whatsoever using the roqyGPS and my QStarz Q818x unit. Google maps actually track movement without problems...just that there are no maps being update as the car moves obviously since it's not connected to any data.


in theory, this should work 100% I will know when my gps device arrives.

1) Install roqyBT
2) Use bluetooth GPS device
3) Use Navigon software (even if not iPad compatible yet will work)

edit: 5/11/2010: Navigon DOES INDEED TRACK - HOWEVER IT WORKS WITH QUIRKS. WHEN YOU ARE IN THE "SHOW MAPS" MODE, YOU WILL SEE THAT NAVIGON DOES INDEED TRACK YOUR POSITION. WHEN YOU TRAVERSE, IT WILL DISPLAY YOUR COORDINATES IN REAL TIME. HOWEVER, IT HAS ALOT OF ISSUES SUCH AS ORIENTATION PROBLEMS (SHOWS THAT YOU ARE POINTING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION BUT MOVING FORWARD - GIVING A LOOK AS IF YOU ARE MOVING BACKWARDS!). When you set a destination to go towards, it will pinpoint your current location - then it just stops and not update your location; it seems that way but during your traversing, navigon will sometimes randomly display your movement but at many times more than some, it will show you moving strangely!

But GOOGLE MAPS WORKS!! (see post #69)

You don't even need to have the iPad 3G model to get GPS! Thanks to roqyBT, you can use almost all NMEA GPS receivers!

I'll report back when I get the gps unit this week!

'Enable' hints that there is a GPS chip in the iPad that isn't on. Which would be pointless to include if it wasn't enabled.

It's an MTK2 device.

66Channels - one of the highest dbm sensitive gps with about over 40 hours of use. You can google the unit: QStarz BT-818x

The unit is about $63 purchased online.

You can get any SIRF3 or MTK/MTK2 units and it is compatible. Here's a list of compatible devices (from the roqyBT forums): Navigon, tom tom, even google maps will work with roqyBT and any of these devices tested so far

I"m going to post up a whole video review of it. I'm excited - considering how JB really opened up the opportunities with the iPad!

I want a really reliable gps receiver - the iPhone and even the tomtom mount is a rip really.

This sucker Qstarz BT818x is an MTK2 unit - provides about 40+ hours of usage!

roqyBT works on iPhone - tested using the BT GPS only. There is another app for file transfers it's called roqyFiles
It seems to be working for the iPad as well - just have to get my unit and test. But the iPad and iPhone shares the exact same BT hardware.

this one is only for BT GPS devices.

you can use the triangulation method using WIFI mode only. But the iPad WIFI model DOES include a magnetnometer.

For 63 bucks thats definitely worth looking into... I'm interested now! I have 3g on my wifi ipad via tethering and don't think I'd need gps. but it definitely couldn't hurt!

I just thought it would be sweet to have an option for us wifi only owners. Since I can't afford another iPad 3G, the lucky ones already have a clean solution with the gps built right in!

It's a way for poor folk to get more value from their existing hardware
You can get a $19 GPS unit and it will work fine too. No need for 66channels but hey, $63 isn't that much compared to say a tomtom gps mount!

And the benefits are huge: 9.7" car navigation and the sucker's battery lasts so long, it's so legit!

In the early days i always used a BT GPS together with a nokia or something. Works like a charm. In fact, it's better then the iphone GPS.

IDK, I just feel like the whole purpose of the iPad is portability. To make our mobile computing life easier by not having to lug around a bunch of bulky hardware. I just wonder at what point are we negating the purpose. All these people getting a personal hotspot for 3/4G now this. Just not for me.

Get a GPS for location services, a MIFI for 3G, a keyboard for typing, a bunch of cases for various occasions, a stand for watching movies, a dock for charging, a camera adapter to load photos, a cleaning cloth, put on an anti-glare screen protector, other accessories for your specific needs, and a big bag to put in all these things, and you will be all set.

Very simple, really.
