Error occurred backing up iPad running iOS 12

Trying to backup an old iPad running iOS 12 (the last version this iPad can run) to a Mac running Monterey so I can then restore onto a new iPad.

I have tried backing it up a few times. I've even deleted the old backups and it gets most of the way and then says an Error Occurred.

How do I fix this problem?

Edit: Just had to stop the iPad from going to sleep for the backup to complete.
