Essentially useless "Limit Adult Content" restriction

Hi guys,

I've tried the "Limit Adult Content" on my iPad, which states it will block out "popular adult websites" etc. Sounds good. But, it doesn't work. It blocks almost everything - including Google.com, NY Times, and even Bible websites... *shrug*. Any ideas on this? It really isn't functioning right at all...

Well, Google can get one basic porn and other erotica. NY Times has stories about war, murders, and other ethically unsound things. Bible sites are based on the Christan bible and that thing isn't the most G rated book on the shelf. From one perspective, it's working as designed and doing a good job of it.

I agree with that - but almost everything is restricted. I kind of assumed 'most adult websites' would be the obvious (porn) sites... not Google, NY Times and a list of other incredibly common sites... hmm?

While you could argue a point, I don't think it quite works 'as advertised'.

I have to agree with Post #2. I've always assumed that the blocking of Adult Content is to protect children from stumbling onto something untoward at their tender ages. If anything, in total, it works a little too well and the parameters of the filters should be reviewed for common sense.

It worked as OP had expected for someone I spoke to, except it didn't block out one porn site that starts with B and his kid was caught looking at it. I'm not sure what's up with it blocking out NYT, Google, etc.

You could try one of the free/cheap dns filtering sites like OpenDNS.

Of course openDNS is blocked too ;-)

I do use opendns. But doesn't the DNS servers change on each wifi network I connect to?

Yes, it change on each wifi network. Also, there is nothing in the "restrictions" settings to lock the DNS. The kids can change it at anytime.
It's been more than 10 years since everyone ask Apple this essential feature for a better parental control.
For 10 years they did NOTHING to respond to this request. It's extremely coward. I decided to just not buy any iphone for my teens. Thank you very much Apple!

The restrictions setting always unchecks itself after I've set it to 'Limit Adult Content.' Does Apple just want to inundate our searches with porn crud? I, as a mom, can have a phone in my hand, set all the settings to a limited adlut content, all content under explicit results, like NC 17 for music, TV shows, ect., and then get back into the phone that has never left my hand, and it is back on all access. The Limit Adult Content box is back unchecked. This happens every single time I set this. It's like it needs a save settings feature because it ALWAYS goes back to explicit results. What it up? Why will it never save the setting to filter explicit results & limit adult content?
