Extending LAN over the internet, for multiplayer games.

Me and my friend both have the iPod Touch and a few games we both have offer a LAN wifi multiplayer mode. Would it be possible too "Share" my LAN over the internet so it would recognize him as being on my LAN so we could play those games in multiplayer mode? Preferably Free, and I hope what i said made sense

I realize it's probably a far stretch but worth asking.

VPN is the technology you're looking for. And OpenVPN is a free implementation of it.
That being said, note that it's a rather complicated matter, and I'm not sure whether all home routers support it.
