External Display with MacBook -- Does Catalina allow you to disable it?

I use a MacBook Pro with an external LG 5k display. One of the major annoyances for me is that I can't manually enter clamshell mode without physically closing the screen. This means that I have to give up TrueTone and better thermal management by closing the screen. Normally I'd leave it open and just deal with the fact that I'm pushing more pixels than needed, however, Safari now prompts for touchID every time it wants to retrieve a password, which is a pain.

Can someone let me know if Catalina solves this issue?
