Facetime in web browser: Microphone never works

Is there any trick to get Facetime to work on Chrome? For me the microphone input refuses to work every time. I've tried it on two separate PCs with two different microphones: nothing. I can hear the other end of the call but there's no microphone from me. I have tried it on Chrome and Edge (Firefox not supported). I gave the Facetime website access to the mics. The mics are working fine in windows, and I even used a mic tester website to verify that it's not a browser issue. The Facetime UI lets you select between different audio devices, and for some reason the mic is duplicated ("Communications - Mic in at rear panel" and "Mic in at rear panel"), but regardless, neither of them work.
