I am trying to help someone who wrote with this problem:

The fan on my my Macbook starts running uncontrollably when I open the iMessages app. When I open the Activity Monitor, two programs usually take up over 80% of my CPU capacity: iMessages and another program called soagent. According to the internet, soagent is a program that connects my contact book to iMessages. While these two programs are running, my computer runs extremely slowly and is rendered almost unuseable. When I close the two programs, the fans on my computer calm down and I can return to normal use.

I've helped other folks in the past, but this one is beyond my pay grade.

Can anyone provide any advice??/

I would be curious if they log out of iMessage on their MacBook and just have the program open would it do the same thing. This could help determine if it's the program simply being open or if when the program is open & signed in thus creating this connection could be the issue.
