I've been going in circles trying to get a trial copy of Final Cut Pro. I'm on High Sierra and you CANNOT get a functional copy of FCP off the app store unless you run 10.14.6 (Mojave).

Before I plop down $300 for a piece of software, I like to at least give it a trial even if its crippleware till you buy. Also, I think forcing an upgrade to Mojave just to test/buy it is ridiculous.

I am thinking of using my Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of my current OS, disconnecting the CCC drive, upgrading to Mojave, testing FCP, and then stay on Mojave and buy FCP, or dump it and go back to High Sierra with CCC. But, what a pain.

Does anyone have a different idea other than going to Mohave? Thanks.

Thank you, but this installer fails with this message:

"Final Cut Pro X can't be installed on this disk. macOS 10.14.6 or later is required."

macOS 10.14.6 is Mojave. I have macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra) and for a number of reasons do not want to upgrade to Mojave unless I have to (e.g. 32 bit apps).

FCP X and Mojave work well on my 2013 rMBP, I see no reason for you not to upgrade to Mojave. If you don't want to, then your idea of testing it all out on an external drive with Mojave will work. Personally, I would just upgrade and be done with it, but having a cloned system drive is always a good practice.

Apple is not forcing you to perform the free upgrade to Mojave (although I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t) they’re just saying you can’t run the app on High Sierra. It’s not a conspiracy. Mojave is the last and I would say best macOS that still runs 32bit and 64bit apps as well as APFS. Plus you will get another two years of support from Apple security updates.

This should work on High Sierra - FinalCutProTrial10.4.3.dmg
Code:
https://secure-appldnld.apple.com/Final_Cut_Pro_X/091-84145-20180530-bac0824e-dd7b-423b-b4d5-eb61358d2911/FinalCutProTrial10.4.3.dmg
According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Cut_Pro_X#Release_history, 10.4.7 is the first version that requires macOS Mojave or later
Man, I just made an account solely for the purpose of saying thank you so much!

I love MacOS, but there are plenty of good reasons not to upgrade, and I have several of them. Apple forcing an upgrade is frustrating to say the least. How'd you find this, by the way??

This is awesome, thanks so much. Care to share the pro google tips? I don't even know how to google for something like this effectively, "final cut pro trial dmg site:apple.com" doesn't really turn up any good hits

Mojave is substantially better than High Sierra. Much more stable, far fewer bugs and glitches. Frankly, I wish they had skipped releasing an OS this past year and given us a year of additional maintenance on Mojave over the nonsense we got with Catalina. The only reason to stick with High Sierra is that it is the last version your Mac will run.

This is an annoying quirk about the App Store. The first time you download the app, you *must* do so on a computer that is compatible with the latest version.

However, once the app is on your account, you'll be given the option to download an older compatible version if you try to download the app from your purchase history on an older OS.

So, while you will need temporary access to Mojave, you don't need to permanently upgrade your computer. If you have a friend with a Mac, ask to briefly log in on their computer. A Virtual Machine will work too, if you have any familiarity with that.

Edit: Oh, you already found a working link! Well, this will help you in the event you actually want to buy Final Cut!

I have had the exact opposite experience. Mojave is fine, but High Sierra is faster and less crash prone.

High Sierra > Mojave >>>>>> Catalina

Is there anyway you can link me to version 10.0.9?
