I checked the box to "open folders in tabs instead of new windows" and after awhile decided I liked them opening in new windows after all. I went back and unchecked the box, but folders are still opening in tabs. I have been through multiple restarts, but that hasn't reset Finder to reflect changing it back. What else should I do? Do I have to resort to deleting the plist for Finder?

Try from Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.finder FinderSpawnTab 0; killall Finder

Oddly, now it works as set (open folders in a new window) the first time. If I then close the second window, and open the same folder again, it opens as a tab in the first window opened.
