iPhone 6(S)/Plus Fingerprint recognition problem on iPhone 6s

I get to the point where a diagram of a fingerprint appears (where I think I need to put my finger on it) but it disappears in a flash a produces an error message (I can't remember its wording).

So how can I set up my fingerprint to startup my iPhone 6s please?
