Forgotten password... password recovery asks for my password???

Howdy...

I sincerely apologize for if this has been done to death... but I'm hoping someone can shed some light...

I am trying to get back into a forgotten password apple ID. I go to iforgot.apple.com, and enter my ID...

It then proceeds to send a 4 digit code to my phone (not an apple device)... I enter that into the website, which is accepted...

The next screen then asks for my password... which is what I came here to reset because I've forgotten it... Argh!

Can anyone suggest another course of action. I no long have my old iPhone, and my current Mac uses a different apple ID. I don't have a recovery key. Any help would be appreciated..

Are you positive you are being prompted for your Apple Id password and not the password for a "trusted device", i.e. the login password for a Mac signed into your iCloud account?
