Just went to the macgurushop.com site there is now only a sentence that says:

"Dear Customer, Mac Guru has gone out of business, all refunds will be issued within the coming week."

Did someone contact his isp? Good work! The site was up for less than a day! I think you guys have him on the run.
nice, im surprised he left that quickly. watch out for the next one though  obviously we're doing something right :D . back to reality, he'll probably be much more careful next time, if there is a next time.

Good work guys. I have a list of other sites but want to make sure they are real businesses before posting here. Keep up the good work, I think we are getting across to Dennis, let's keep him running while the police look for him.

Thanx

It's great to see this thread working properly again. Good job on MacGuruShop

I searched through several shopping websites yesterday and can only find the vendio mac maniacz shop via Froogle. I have never seen any of Dennis' sites on a search other than Froogle. Is this what everyone else is finding?

If anybody is interested in the addresses Dennis (his real name) has used and what they really are, I can provide that via email. jxyama, you are correct on the MacWhizShop address. However, not all of the addresses have been fake. In fact, most have been legit.

Also, I am in touch with an officer who has been working this case for about 2 years. It seems to me that we are on the verge of nailing Dennis, but we need some cooperation from the RCMP.

lildancer, I have attempted to email you and PM you several times, but neither one seems to work. Please email me at bre4(at)email(dot)byu(dot)edu

Diction contradiction.

I really appreciate the support that many of you have shown, especially on this thread. My ISP, a level 1 registrar is investigating these hoodlums and may have locked their IP for a bit. I cannot take any credit, a good friend with MUCH pull used an important favor and I believe we may have slammed the door for a few precious moments. Please don't relax or let up one bit in your individual efforts to remove this infection from our community. Mac rules! MacRumors rocks! I will keep in touch to give progress reports on my recent developments. Again thanks for all the support.

found this website registred to our friend Dutchak
http://www.macfanshop.com

It was up a couple of days ago but now has "under construction". I'm still looking at 3 other ones before I post here.

The macmanicz vendio store has now been closed. I guess something is working.

Vendio is swift at recognizing a fraud. His ISP is cooperating and the mail-servers will be thoroughly investigated. The only thing that will stop them is a lock and lost key. Bring the head in and the sites will fall. Maybe they should have stuck to real estate fraud or something less offensive. Learn will they!

Thanks for the info, jxyama. We're doing our best to track down whoever it is that's doing this...

Anyone else who's been spammed/had their account attempt to be hacked, please contact myself or one of the other mods via private message so we can collect all the info. Thanks :)

edit - I like IP2Location.

thanks rower. mine came up as Mexico and Thailand, according to the service you recommended.

perhaps i was a bit too quick to think of this thread being the cause. rower - do you have any reasons to suspect that MR membership at large was subjected to hacking?

if you specify an email address for contact (you may have to when you sign up, not sure), you get an email detailing how you made more than 5 invalid login attempts and that your login would be suspended for 15 min.

i got two of those in my email account...

not sure if it's related to this thread (but it must be unless there's been a massive MR hack attempts in general because i can't think of any other threads i've posted in where i could end up being a target of hostile hack attempts), but if it is, pretty petty stuff, if you ask me. my hypothesis is that someone here has been having bad luck making false accusations because they are newbies so decided to try to post as a "regular" by hacking an account or two. childish. geez.

i dont see how they thought they would get away with it though, seeing as how we check the thread regularly. on a side note, what time did you get the emails? mine were at 6:29 pm and 11:20 pm pacific time.

mine were last night, 11:23pm and 11:38pm (on Sat). not sure what time zone, -500 indicated, so i'm guessing eastern?

i assume they just thought my password would be easy to guess or something... unfortunately (for them), my password has absolutely no connection to my id, location, Macs or my occupation. :p

I got one at 10:19pm on 11-13-2004. The locator has it out of Mexico. His spam is coming out of Edmonton, AL and Fort Lauderdale, FL. Sorry little porn peddler can't get enough attention these days. Flame on!

-edit- Macgurushop seems a bit open. It's like that mole arcade game.

this thread is pathetic and a disgrace to all Mac users

I might caution the MacRumors posters: I believe that this kind of denigration of character is actionable under slander and libel laws. While he may sure look like a cheat, are you willing to bet a legal penalty? Maybe the original poster timsq-svner is a fraud himself or the same person. Maybe the fraudster is able to beat the charges in court. Maybe etc.

Bottomline: I wouldn't allege fraud on a specific individual or company, unless I could personally guarantee that he was in fact fraudulent, and I'm guessing that none of the posters, no matter how much it looks that way can.

All you people are pathetic as Svner stated in one of his posts. Too much time on your hands trying to play detective. Get a job or better yet a life!

And I quote Rower from post #204 "Forum members are free to say whatever they want"

you again huh? one of the ones who supposedly got a product from dennis. check your second and third posts if you dont believe me, they're both almost exactly the same saying that you got a powerbook from dennis. also if you didnt notice, all of your posts warning us about slander are almost exactly the same. have a little imagination please.
