Why are computer games so expensive to play now? In the '90s you could buy a computer game disk, install it on your computer and play as long as you wanted for free. Not connected to the Net and no need to buy dollars, points, gold, etc. to keep playing. You could advance through levels, and upgrade vehicles, supplies, and equipment based on skill, ranking, and score, not money. Are there any games like that today, where you can install it and just pay once for the game without having to continually pay for things to keep playing the game? Games that aren't "pay to play". Especially military or space flight sim shooter games. And specifically for Mac. Poker games are expensive now, too. They program the games so you lose constantly if you aren’t paying them money for things, more money, etc., to force you to pay. You can only get winning hands if you pay them, for one thing or another. 😎

Which games were the last ones that didn’t make you feel like you were being nickeled and dimed?

And the specs of your Mac?

Could it be that inflation is running ramoant more so now rather than back in the day?

Spiraling production costs, increased corporate interest (greed) resulting in many smaller dev studios being bought out or closed and greater expectations (graphics) by the general public. As for the Mac too little interest by the limited user base versus Windows or now even Linux resulting in game dev's dropping the platform or having little to no interest in expanding into it.

Personally don't do pay to play I buy the games outright or look to the modding community for full free titles such as Radiophobia 3 Total Chaos & The Dark Mod. There are many more on MODD.com and other such sites that are legitimately free without the nonsense.

Mac Source Ports may be of help for older titles if you want to play on Apple Silicon or 64 Bit Intel Mac's, however you mostly need the original game for the data files which are usually cheap on the likes of GOG.com (no DRM and no connection needed for single player games). Wait on a sale and get them for an even lower price :)

They're only expensive if you're buying them day one with DLC. There are lots of ways to save on PC games. There's constant Steam sales, third party key sellers like GreenManGaming (which btw you can get good discounts on new titles through GreenMan) buying Humble Bundles which also supports charity in turn.

In the '90s you could buy a computer game disk, install it on your computer and play as long as you wanted for free. Not connected to the Net and no need to buy dollars, points, gold, etc.

The majority of games can be played offline. If you only play multiplayer yeah you're gonna get shafted, but there's loads of amazing single player games, many of which defined the previous decade of one of greatness.

Uhh...yeah? Like the majority of games are still like that only the major live service multiplayer games are like how you described. When you venture out of just the high profile games like Call of Duty you will be introduced to so many amazing games.

If you have a Meta Quest or a PSVR 2 there's one poker game that is completely free to play called Vegas Infinite, formerly known as PokerStars VR. It also supports other casino games like Craps and Blackjack. I've been playing it for 4 years ever since I got into VR and I guarantee you'd love the game. On Windows it has a 2D mode if you don't got a headset, but honestly the game is meant to be played in VR due to it's immersion. Actually being face to face with the different people you play online poker with, socializing with them, some being across the otherside of the world, and being in a poker table having a virtual martini in Macau in the far future or on a yacht in Monte Carlo. It's a unique experience you gotta try.

Alright back to the recommendations. If you want milsim and space flight Mac games specifically that number is gonna be small, but I'm sure you already know that. ARMA 3 is on Mac, and was updated for native Apple Silicon support recently. If you want a milsim, ARMA 3 is your game

For Space Flight, the highly popular and multiple award winning space sandbox game No Man's Sky got a Mac port this year.

Annnnnd that's it. That's all I got unfortunately that you requested. If you want other genres or games on Windows and Linux I can help with that but space sims on macOS is pretty much just EVE Online (which is a MMO that requires a subscription and has an additional money and time sink that don't even get me started on that) and No Man's Sky.

Eve Online isn't a space sim, it is an Excel/Numbers Spreadsheet sim.

You should wait until the 21st then check out the Steam Winter Sale. There will be tons of Mac games for dirt cheap. I personally have over 120 mac games in my Steam account and I only paid full price for maybe 2 or 3 of them. The only game I ever payed to play was Hearthstone, I probably paid over $100-150 over the years with that game. Blizzard used to be the savor of Mac gaming back in the day. They supported us with AAA games that where on the forefront of online gaming with cross platform online connectivity back when no one else was even trying. But now I don't care to support them anymore after their merger with Activision.

One old poker game for Mac that I still have is Poker Night at the Inventory. I'm pretty sure I got it for free but sadly its not available anymore to buy on the Steam store.
