Free year for refurbished AC+ exchange

I don't know if this is common knowledge yet or not, but apparently AC+ exchanges of an iPhone count as a new device that gets you one year of ATV+ for free.

I just got an email asking me to activate my free year because I purchased a new device. But the only "new" Apple thing I got recently was I exchanged my iPhone for a refurbished iPhone under warranty due to screen issues.

My understanding is new from an authorized retailer or refurbished from Apple will get you a free year.
