Called up to a friends house yesterday, he showed me his iPhone SE Space Grey 64GB.. said he was at a clients house and the phone shut off and hasn't come on since.

Sure enough, it's dead. I tried DFU mode, plugging it into my MBP and even leaving it on the mains for a while and nothing.

It was bought not long after the SE was released, so it's out of warranty.. but it's less than two years old.

I've never seen this from an iPhone before, not without water damage etc. He says no water damage is possible.

Though he did admit to only ever using those cheap nasty USB cables since new... and an odd 3 port in car 12v charger so unless that has resulted in the problem with the battery?

Apple want around £220 for an out of warranty repair. Likely just to replace it, not sure he's interested in that. I advised him for today, take it to one of those dodgy phone repair shops and they might try a new battery in it (it'd take us a while to order and fit it ourselves, might as well use the shop to get a straight answer). Since we can't get OEM batteries from Apple, theirs is as good as our own eBay part if that does fix it. No reply from him yet on whether or not this

But if it's not the battery, we know Apple will replace it for £220.. Is there anything else worth doing or trying before calling it a day on this iPhone SE?

He's also concerned about losing his data. I don't blame him. I told him to book it in for Apple to take a look, if anyone has a hope it's them.. but I reckon even Apple would just recycle it and conclude that the data is lost for good.. unless we find a magical cure to the problem. Thanks in advance.

Does he not back up his phone? Any new iPhone he picks up will be able to be restored from the backup created with his SE, whether it's on his computer with iTunes or through iCloud. If not, lesson learned. It's a set-it-and-forget-it feature and there's no reason not to have a backup in this day and age.

Yes, backed up to iCloud. He's using an old iPhone 5 at the minute, giving us time to hopefully get to the bottom of this.

What I'd really like to do - if there is any suggestions on this - is try and get his SE running. Less than two years is quite poor from a product by Apple

If all SEs died in less than two years, yes, it would be a quite poor product from Apple. Most will last much longer. I had a boss using a 4s until just last year - and he retired it unwillingly only because he had to get a new phone for work.

Well, yes. That's the issue.

The fact that an iPhone 5 is still going strong enough to use whilst the SE is being investigated says a lot.. We bought SE's because of how great the 5 was.

Any suggestions?

Apple will not fix the phone. All they will do is sell your friend a refurbished phone. All data will be lost because Apple specifically state in all their user manuals that it is the users responsibility to back up their data on a regular basis and as such Apple will just erase all data as part of their repair procedure.

The only way your friend will get the original phone working again is if it is taken to an independent repair shop that specialises in iphone repairs.

Well actually there are two options:

1) Take it to an independent repair iphone specialist, who is more than likely going to charge upwards of £100 to get it fixed

2) Mobile phone operators are still doing good deals on SE phones, Three do one for £15 a month (24 month contract), plus with a new phone you get the standard 1 yrs warranty.

Your friend needs to decide which is the best option, get the old phone repaired or get a new one and pay x amount a month on new phone contract.

I am not sure if you have tried this or not - I guess you have if you have been trying to enter DFU mode.

Hold done the power and home buttons at the same time for about 5-10 secs until the apple logo comes back on.
My 5s has randomly become unresponsive after locking it and it has worked for me.
