Posting this for the three other people out there that might be in the same boat. I was able to change my AppleID to my Gmail account. I was logging into the web-based iCloud site when I was prompted to enter an email address. I tried my iCloud email address but it got rejected (I had a MobileMe account, which became a .Mac account which became my iCloud account). I entered my Gmail account, verified it, and my AppleID changed to my Gmail address.

This was interesting because I gave up trying to change my AppleID years ago. There was some technical reason why legacy accounts couldn't change their IDs. I think it had something to do with people who stopped paying for MobileMe when the .Mac transition happened.
