GarageBand - how to combine projects ?

I have multiple GarageBand (v1.1) projects that I need to combine into a single one. If I export to iTunes and import to Garageband, I seem to suffer serious loss of quality. I can cut and paste between projects, but this is very tedious with lots of files - I have to continually open and close projects. What am I missing here?!
