Hi all, I purchased a new Gen 7 Ipod back in July, I only want the thing for my music in my car and when Im camping out using a bluetooth speaker so I have no need for features such as measuring how many farts i do per day :) .....right from the start the unit loses 4% battery life per hour with everything switched off, I've tried 3 or 4 IOS versions with no improvement, I'm currently on IOS 14.1, I have taken it into the Apple store in my town and the kid said it was fine , It uses 4% battery life per hour WITH NOTHING SWITCHED ON.............I have followed all the steps on the internet to try and extend battery life with no improvement......I can't accept that this thing would eat through battery life even when switched off.....................I would have been better off spending money on my old Gen 2 as it was fantastic , only using perhaps 1% of the battery overnight, does anybody have any suggestions on what I could do but please dont tell me to switch apps refresh and wifi off because I've done all that, I've done full resets as well. Cheers Bernie

Keep it on a USB port so it stays charged.
Thanks for taking the time to reply, of course I can do that, it's not really the point of the post though, I would like to get the device to operate efficiently like my old gen 2, I don't see why it has to use 4% battery life per hour with everything switched off.

Have you turned off background refresh? Have you turned off WiFi?

What about backing up and then starting over with it as brand new? It could be that some app, e.g., Facebook, is trying to do things in the background and eating up juice.

What apps are you using or had been launched during your test? Have you force-quit all apps? Then, done a hard restart? Power and home button held down for 5 seconds or so — keep until the bright Apple logo comes on the screen.

Have you looked at the battery use setting? Which apps are using lots of time? Delete them a couple at a time and see what happens. (Always back up everything first and write down any special settings.)

Your IPT is still under Apple Care. Try calling Apple support nationally and trouble shoot with them. I've had good luck calling Saturday mornings — gotten higher-level, informed specialists who know their stuff.

That is a lot of battery life if nothing is running or working in the background.

I'm sure you've tried updating to the latest iOS but, if not, try that, too.

Good luck!

Hi Saturn007,
Thanks for your reply, yep , done all that, I don't use any apps, it's standalone for music, I've even deleted most of the standard apps, I have attached a couple of screen shots from the battery app.

Am I reading that first one right? About half the time is devoted to the Settings app?!

The second one indicates that most of the time Music is running. Is Music streaming on? So that the IPT keeps trying to connect to WiFi?

Note: If the IPT were playing music all the time, 4% per hour would be 25 hours, which isn't too shabby.

I'd still recommend calling national Apple Care support directly!

no, no streaming music........the music played is loaded onto the ipod......wifi and bluetooth are never on .......no other aps running..............notice that when music is playing it is charging.......all battery loss is when it's idle

I'm in Australia so when I contact Apple I get steered to the local Apple store where you have to jump through hoops just to get into the store only to be greeted by a pimple faced kid who tells you that your battery is good and the loss is normal..............if that is true 4% per hour while idle................there must be a better alternative out there.

The battery for the IPT7 is atrocious. I got one when it first came out and had a battery fail. Got a replacement and it drains quick. Just the size battery inside of it.

The Gen 7 has a smaller/thinner battery. The battery is very weak and the charge wont last long...

Apple should of put in an iphone battery but the ipod would of been thicker.

It doesn’t matter that the battery is small/thin, it should still not be draining this much per hour in standby. I know this thread is old, but OP, have you installed a fresh version of the latest iOS? By restoring it from iTunes?

The device is basically not fit for purpose w.r.t battery life. Same as the Gen 6.

will the new iouch last over 6 hours listing to music while cycling, taking photos of the ocean egrets and having wifi on at say a tavern? im looking for a 6-7 hour device that can do all that since the itouch gen4 is losing battery power but was a great device all these years.
thanks!

it could be a malfunction in the power controller ?! Right! I had a similar situation with the Iphone se, it is best to take it to the service for diagnostics!

I have something similar with my iPod Touch (6th generation). I got the battery replaced but the problem persists. Actually, the battery isn't draining as fast as it looks, it just drops in lumps to around 12%, they stays there for ages. It also never charges fully to 100%, just 99% - original battery and replacement. So to agree with the points above; it looks like the power controller and if you're still under warranty then get the unit replaced.

Mine drops to 50% in 2 days without touching it and with background use, email fetching, wifi, ect. turned off...

Weak or defective battery?

Battery life seem much worse to me on 14.6 compared to 14.5...

Sh... don't tell anyone. but the IPT Gen 6 and Gen 7 are basically not fit for purpose w.r.t battery life.

Apple put in too small a battery to be useful as a dedicated music player.

You don't have a flawed unit... it is basically a flawed design.

Makes me wonder if the Gen 8 will have a bigger battery.. Based on the render images it does look a little bit thicker...

So...100 decided by 4% is 25 hours...so I am a little confused on how this is a bad thing especially when coming from something has small as an iPod touch that is old...Why not just use your iPhone? Stream the music or buy an iPhone with larger storage? You would save money buy buying a larger iPhone and not buying a separate iPod Touch just for music.

Forgive me, but I don't understand why people buy a separate device for music these days...as the iPhone is more than capable of doing what you want. If using too much battery on your iPhone while camping is an issue, this can easily be solved by using an external battery to charge the iPhone if it gets low. Buying a larger memory iPhone so you can physically download music and buying an external battery is still cheaper then buying an iPhone AND an iPod touch.

Maybe I am missing something. If I am, please explain it.

These things are about as badly designed as anything, battery/portability wise. Just a byproduct of the idiotic thinness. Next version should be twice as thick. It's supposed to be a on-the-go sort of thing NOT! :D

I'm thinking velcro a thin portable battery to the worthless thing (I won one btw). An idea. OR maybe they sell a battery case? Probably not, but I'll post back if I find one.

update: they do. Here's one
