I am looking for simple network diagram software similar to what you get in commercial network firewall softwares (e.g. mcafee).

Just a list of all wired and wireless network devices (routers, NAS etc.) with IP address information presented in network topology format.

Try Etterape for a "graphical" interface - it's cool, but a bit limited imo.
And Ettercap(-ng)/Wireshark for package sniffing, use arpspoof if necessary (on switched ethernet, google for dsniff)

You may have noticed: these tools work perfectly under Ubuntu 8.10 (running in VMWare Fusion, make sure you've got the network interface set to "bridged").

On osx: type "ifconfig" in your terminal, I don't know about more sophisticated tools...
