My wife's and my iPhones are having issues with Google Maps running continuously for hours in the background:

This behaviour continues even in the low-power mode, which I believe is supposed to disable background app refresh. Re-installing Google Maps did not help: the issue returned a couple of days after reinstalling.

For a couple of years, we've been using Location Sharing and other Google Maps features that require background app refresh and location services always on without any problems. I think the issue started for us with iOS 12.3.1 update.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

PS: Unfortunately, switching from Google Maps Location Sharing to Find Friends is not an option as some family members use Androids (I can't believe they are related to me ;)
