iPhone 13 Pro Grouped notifications - how do I expand?

Hello.

iOS 16.

How do I simply expand the group of notifications that is sorts by app? I go to expand and it opens the app in question when I really wanted to see what all the notifications were by expanding them. Instead it opens the app and I have to exit then go to the notifications again.
