I agree with you. I have been a loyal mac fan for years, back to the days of the G4 ibooks and the 2nd gen ipod and I'm kind of disappointed with the new 3G phone. Yesterday I was up til 2am pacific time trying to get AT&T to get my 3G service activated only to wake up this morning and realize that I only get 1 bar with 3G while my 2G iphone gets full bars in the same place.
Okay, there are some factors to consider here. I'm not discounting the fact that the 3G radio may suck in the iPhone, but let's think about a few things here.
1. The 3G signal may be coming from a different (further away) tower than your 2G iPhone. Normally, they do operate off the same towers, but it's not always the case.
2. Apple decided to be more conservative with 3G signal strength indicators. (If they're both running the same firmware, this may or may not be true.)
3. AT&T has so many licenses per area in which to operate. In some areas, they're operating 3G WCDMA on 1900 and moving 2G GSM to 850 networks. 850 penetrates buildings better than 1900.
You really can't compare "how many bars" one phone has to another. Even within manufacturers.
Most people are using their iPhones for two reasons:
A. Voice
B. Data
As long as the voice is clear and the data is fast, I don't see a problem. People are getting bent out of shape because "my original iPhone gets better bars" without looking at all of the factors at work.
I do know that the battery drains faster when there is a weaker signal on 3G because the radio has to work harder. That is a problem...
I've made several calls on my 3G iPhone and I've had a Samsung Blackjack and a Sync. 3G voice sounds much clearer and doesn't drop out as much in my experience*. Data is certainly faster and I can't argue with that. I'm happy with my iPhone and I do notice the signal indicator jumping around, but I'm going to stick it out. My iPhone works for what I want it to do. But if you don't like it, by all means, buy another phone.
*Note: Your mileage may vary. Based on my personal experience and is not meant to be the gospel.
